Book Discussion: Brother and Sister Enter the Forest by Richard Mirabella

The novel weaves two timelines together: Willa and Justin's childhood/teenage years and their adult reunion. How did this structure affect your reading experience?

What does the Lake Man that Justin see's at the Lakehouse represent to him?

What is the reason Willa makes dioramas of Justin?

How do each of the three main characters, Willa, Justin and Grace deal with the trauma of Justin's attack?

How does it effect their relationship to one another?

How do they process their trauma?

What does the forest represent in the story? Is it a threat, a sanctuary, or both?
Justin is left for dead in the forest
Justin spends a lot of time in the forest along
Willa searches for Justin in the woods after he dissapears

What does the novel have to say about the idea of masculinity?
                Grace's viewpoint?
                Nick's viewpoint?

Mental illness and abuse are significant themes. How does the author handle these sensitive subjects, and what do you think the book says about the recovery process?

Why can't Justin seem to come of age and become a fully formed adult?

The ending of the novel is somewhat ambiguous. What did you take away from the conclusion, and do you believe the characters found any true solace or resolution?

The novel asks: "How do you help someone beyond reach?" How does this question play out, and does the book offer any answers?

Discuss Willa's decision to let Justin back into her life after years of estrangement, despite her fear of the chaos he might bring. Was it the right choice?

How did the parents' actions (or inactions) contribute to the children's trauma? The book mentions that no one in the family talks about their father. How does this silence impact the siblings?

The author chose to only show you snippets of the main characters lives, jumping around in the timeline. Why do you suppose they decided to do that? Did you enjoy this format?

What did you imagine ended up happening to Nick?
